Methodology
Everything here is built from the public CILEX registers. This page says how, and — more usefully — what the data cannot tell you.
The registers
Three registers are published by CILEX and CILEx Regulation: the CILEX Authorised Practitioners Directory, the CILEX Directory, and the Professional Paralegal Register. None offers a bulk download. Each is enumerated by searching every practice right and paralegal status in turn and merging the results on the contact identifier the register itself publishes, which makes the deduplication exact rather than name-based.
11,603 distinct people result: 7,727 authorised practitioners and 3,876 paralegals. The first two registers return identical sets of people — the CILEX Directory mirrors the regulator's rather than adding to it.
A cap worth knowing about
A single search returns at most 5,000 rows and says nothing about having truncated. Chartered Legal Executive alone exceeds that, so it is swept again in twenty-six slices by surname initial. Without this the register appears to hold 5,000 Chartered Legal Executives; it holds 7,498.
Employers
The employer field is free text typed by practitioners, so one firm arrives under several spellings. Names are merged only on an exact match key — lowercased, punctuation and legal suffixes removed — which folds "Fletchers Solicitors Ltd" into "Fletchers Solicitors" while keeping "Taylor Rose" and "Taylor Rose MW" apart. Fuzzy matching would merge more and be wrong more.
Those employers were matched against the Companies House bulk register. A match needs an exact name or a matching registered postcode; weaker evidence is recorded as ambiguous and no company number is shown. Public bodies are labelled as such rather than left looking like failures.
Profile pages
Where a search found a page about someone on their employer's own website, that page was fetched, one request at a time per site, respecting robots.txt. 2,438 were read. The text of those pages is not reproduced here — it is the firms' copyright. What this site publishes from them is counts: how many people at a firm, in a town or in a practice area the firm describes a given way. The derived facts about each person stay in the offline dataset; nothing about an individual is published.
What this cannot tell you
- The register is not the profession. It lists only practising Chartered Legal Executives and CILEX Practitioners. Anyone non-practising, anyone who has chosen not to be listed, and every grade below Chartered Legal Executive — Student, Affiliate, Associate, Graduate — is absent, as is anyone who has left.
- Employer details are self-reported and, on the regulator's own disclaimer, not always current. Addresses are work addresses.
- An authorisation date is not a qualification date. When a right is renamed, existing holders are re-authorised under the new name and the date resets.
- A town is where the employer is, not necessarily where the person practises.
