What does a lawyer cost, and is the first meeting free?
Nothing on any public register answers this, and it is the second most common thing people ask.
Neither CILEx Regulation's directory nor the SRA's register records what anyone charges, whether a first meeting is free, or whether a firm takes work on a no-win-no-fee basis. Price is the question the profession's public infrastructure is silent on, and it came up alongside 540 different firms' names.
What the register does support is a rough sense of who is available and where: 11,603 people across 436 towns, and which kind of work each firm's people are described as doing. Whether one of them is cheaper than another is not knowable from any of it, and a site that implied otherwise would be making it up.
Price transparency rules require regulated firms to publish indicative prices for certain services on their own websites — conveyancing, probate and employment tribunal work among them. That is the place to look, and each firm page here links to the firm's own site where one was found.
